Song Contest
Celebrating the Extraordinary Missionary Month
Presented by the MISSIO and the Missionary Childhood Association

As part of the Extraordinary Missionary Month (October 1, 2019 to Oct. 31, 2019), announced by Pope Francis, MISSIO and the Missionary Childhood Association is sponsoring a song contest for young Catholics in grades 1 through 12. The theme for the contest is: Baptized and Sent: Sharing the Good News and Caring for God’s Creation.

Guidelines for Entry

1) All entries must reflect the theme Baptized and Sent: Sharing the Good News and Caring for God’s Creation.

2) Song refrain must include the words Baptized and Sent

3) Contestants will be asked to create original songs (lyrics and music) with content drawn from, but not limited to Pope Francis’ Encyclical, Laudato Si’

4) While young Catholics may collaborate with friends and family members to perform an original song, only the songwriter may enter the contest. Multiple entries are not permitted. Lyrics may be submitted in English or Spanish, or both.

5) Contestants will be required to upload an official entry form, sheet music and lyrics, and a finished recording as an MP3 file at the website:

6) Each entry must also be accompanied by a letter of support from a pastor, young adult minister, teacher or parent.

7) Files may not be greater than 20MB.

8) Song must not have been previously entered in any other contest or have been recorded, distributed or downloaded via a social networking site (YouTube, Facebook, etc).

9) Song must be appropriate for use during liturgical celebrations and other religious and youth/young adult events and gatherings

10) One grand prize winning song will be chosen based on originality and best interpretation of the contest theme. That song will be submitted to the International Secretariat of the Missionary Childhood Association (at the Vatican). There will be six additional winners chosen, in grade categories, as follows: Grades 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12.

11) Song must be no more than four minutes in length.

12) All Scripture references and other resources used must be cited.

13) Evaluation of the melody will based on its originality, youthfulness and contemporary nature. The melody should seek to further enhance the message of the lyrics. The music should be simple and easy to learn.

14) Final evaluations will be based on the quality of the lyrics and melody; not the vocal or instrumental performance.

15) Those chosen as finalists will be asked to sign an affidavit validating their song’s originality.

16) Music and lyrics will remain the property of the songwriters / composers. The winning song, however, may be used for promotion of the Extraordinary Missionary Month and featured in materials (print and digital) and communications from MISSIO and the Missionary Childhood Association.

17) Deadline for submitting an entry is: Monday, September 23, 2019.

18) Winner will be announced in the fall of 2019, for the celebration of Extraordinary Missionary Month (October 2019).
